COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — Interstate 85 south of Atlanta was the scene of a shooting involving local law enforcement.
Coweta County, Georgia deputies conducted a traffic stop on I-85 South at mile marker 34 for a traffic violation on Monday at around 1:22 p.m., according to a media release.
The release stated that deputies had the driver exit his vehicle and were conducting a roadside interview with him, when the suspect ran back to his vehicle and entered the driver’s compartment.
Deputies attempted to pull the suspect out of his vehicle and also attempted to tase the suspect, with no effect.
“During this altercation, the suspect retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and fired multiple shots at the deputies,” CCSO stated. “The deputies were able to return fire on the suspect. EMS was called immediately and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.”
No deputies were injured during this incident.
Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) was notified and is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
