GREENE COUNTY, Ark. — A Greene County, Arkansas deputy is recuperating after being struck by a passing car while rendering assistance to semi truck experiencing mechanical issues.

The incident occurred just before 6:00 am, on Monday morning.

Greene County Sheriff Brady Snyder said Sergeant Colby Drope was assisting a tractor-trailer driver that was having mechanical issues on Highway 49 northbound between Paragould and Marmaduke when he was struck by a passing motorist.

Drope, knowing that more traffic was coming from the south, was attempting to get the attention of the southbound tractor trailer (in the unobstructed lane) in order to slow them down a bit to prevent another possible collision, Snyder said.

“The southbound tractor-trailer was as far over as he could get, as he could see northbound traffic not stopping for the partial lane obstruction,” Snyder said. “Law enforcement officers often find themselves outside their vehicles on busy highways for a multitude of reasons. Motor vehicle crashes, traffic stops, and disabled motorists are some of the most common reasons for these occurrences.”

“While the incident noted below occurred on a two-lane highway, the law still requires drivers to slow considerably or stop for vehicles with flashing / emergency lights activated until they can pass by safely,” Snyder added.

Drope was seen at Baptist Paragould emergency room shortly after being struck.

“We are thankful to report that no broken bones or serious injury resulted from this incident,” Snyder said. “He was VERY lucky.”
