Erie, Penn. — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) posted its final approval of a 5-year exemption for Truck-Lite brand auxiliary brake-activated pulsating lamps to be installed on the rear of commercial motor vehicles.
According to Truck-Lite, in approving the waiver, FMCSA referred to comments responding to Truck-Lite’s application for the exemption. Positive observations noted that brake-activated pulsating lamps improve rear conspicuity and enhance safety by increasing driver awareness and reducing the likelihood of rear-end collisions.
“Truck-Lite brake-activated pulsating lamps give us an opportunity to get the attention of distracted drivers coming up behind us who are not looking at the overall picture,” said Dean Newell, vice president of safety and driver training at Maverick USA.
Truck-Lite’s LED Brake-Activated pulsating Auxiliary Stop Light functions as a Class II amber strobe that pulsates for up to 4 seconds with each application of the brake, then transitions to solid red for the duration, providing the visibility and durability needed to take advantage of the waiver approval and increase fleet safety on the road.

“This FMCSA exemption marks a critical step forward, allowing fleets to deploy this technology in a fully compliant way while realizing measurable safety benefits,” said Craig Watrous, vice president of technology and compliance at Truck-Lite. “Enhanced brake signal visibility improves driver reaction times and helps prevent rear-end collisions on our roadways.”
The exemption runs from May 29 through June 3, 2031.
