Future of trucking: The road ahead requires industrywide collaboration
Success in this environment will not come from any single source, says Scott Perry, president and CEO of the Florida Trucking Association. Instead, success will be brought about by a collaboration among carriers, industry suppliers, government agencies, law enforcement partners and workforce development organizations. The trucking industry is navigating one of the most challenging operating environments in recent memory. Following several years of freight market contraction, carriers continue to face persistent revenue pressure, rising insurance costs, increasing regulatory complexity and ongoing workforce challenges.

Success in this environment will not come from any single innovation, regulation or business strategy. It will come from stronger collaboration among carriers, industry suppliers, government agencies, law enforcement partners and workforce development organizations.

As an industry, we must remain focused on three priorities:

  1. Improving safety performance;
  2. Developing the next generation of transportation professionals; and
  3. Removing administrative burdens that do not improve compliance or operational outcomes.
What’s the catalyst to make these things happen?

One of the most effective platforms for advancing these priorities is the state trucking association. Through advocacy, education and stakeholder engagement, trucking associations help ensure that industry perspectives are represented in public policy discussions while promoting initiatives that strengthen safety, efficiency and economic growth.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of joining the Florida Trucking Association as president and CEO. Florida has become one of the most dynamic freight markets in the nation, supported by strong leadership, engaged member companies and a growing transportation economy. I am honored to continue building on that momentum alongside our members, industry partners and association staff.

Drivers and technicians are crucial.

At the center of every successful trucking operation are the people who make it work. Drivers and technicians remain the backbone of our industry, and both professions are evolving rapidly.

Technicians today are responsible for maintaining increasingly sophisticated equipment that’s equipped with advanced diagnostics, emissions systems, safety technologies and connected vehicle platforms. Their expertise will play a critical role as our industry continues to adopt emerging technologies designed to improve fleet performance and safety.

Drivers remain the face of our industry. They represent our companies, serve our customers and ensure that essential goods move safely and efficiently throughout our communities. Equipping professional drivers with the training, tools and support necessary to succeed has never been more important.

Driver retention is equally important.

Retaining experienced professional drivers will be equally important. Veteran drivers possess decades of knowledge that cannot be replicated through technology alone.

Creating opportunities for these professionals to mentor and develop the next generation of drivers will help preserve the culture, professionalism and safety standards that define our industry.

Looking ahead, workforce development will remain one of the most important challenges and opportunities facing trucking.

Traditional recruiting approaches alone will not satisfy future workforce needs. Carriers must continue exploring innovative pathways into the profession, including dock-to-driver programs, industry-adjacent recruiting strategies, military transition initiatives and structured succession planning efforts.

Reaching a new generation of trucking professionals.

The next generation of transportation professionals will enter an industry shaped by new technologies, evolving regulations and changing customer expectations.

Preparing them for success will require more than technical training: It will require fostering professionalism, accountability, adaptability and strong working relationships with customers, regulators and law enforcement partners.

As leaders, we can make a difference.

The trucking industry has always demonstrated resilience through periods of change. By working together, investing in our workforce and maintaining our commitment to safety and operational excellence, we can position our industry for long-term success.

I look forward to working alongside our member companies, agency partners, elected officials and industry stakeholders to strengthen trucking in Florida and ensure that the essential contributions of our drivers, technicians and transportation professionals remain recognized and valued throughout our state and nation.
