ASCENSION PARISH, La. — A rash of complaints on Louisiana highways prompted a meeting on Wednesday morning among certain drivers and law enforcement.

Members of the Louisiana State Police Transportation Safety Services (LSP-TSS), the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO), and Rene Industries Inc. held an early morning joint safety talk with commercial vehicle drivers delivering construction aggregates in the Donaldsonville area.

LSP said both law enforcement agencies have received numerous complaints about unsafe driving behavior, and “there have been recent crashes on LA 405 in Donaldsonville that warrant a safety talk,” according to a release issued to social media.

“The safety talk allowed law enforcement and industry to collaborate on how to safely travel the roads with the rise of construction projects in Donaldsonville, notably the 5.8 billion Hyundai Steel Mill,” the release stated.

The plant is expected to create 1,300 direct jobs and 4,100 indirect jobs.

“APSO has begun deploying warning and speed limit signs for commercial vehicles traveling on LA 405. LSP-TSS will continue to enforce federal motor carrier safety regulations and state laws in this area, and will also collaborate with Rene Industries Inc. on future safety discussions,” LSP stated. “We thank Rene Industries Inc. for allowing this to happen today and prioritizing safety. To report reckless driving behavior, dial *LSP (*577).”
