A troop within the New York State Police (NYSP) conducted an enforcement operation promoting road work zone safety.

NYSP conducted “Operation Hard Hat” detail on April 22, 2026, along State Route 17 in the town of Windsor. The detail coincides with National Work Zone Awareness Week, which runs from April 20-24.

65 citations were issued according to a press release issued this week.

Speeding – 34
Seatbelt compliance – 8
Operating an electronic device – 4
Failure to move over (Move Over Law) – 9
Other – 10

NYSP says the initiative “aims to crack down on reckless driving in work zones and protecting the men and women who maintain New York’s roadways and improving safety in active construction zones across New York State.”

As part of the detail, State Troopers are embedded within an active work zone, often dressed as construction workers, to observe and identify motorists with risky behavior. Once a violation is observed, uniformed Troopers in the area are advised and issue the appropriate citations.

Operation Hard Hat targets dangerous driving behaviors that put both workers and motorists at risk, including speeding, distracted driving, or violating the Move Over Law.

“Work zones present unique hazards, including reduced lanes, shifting traffic patterns, and the presence of workers,” NYSP said. “The men and women working at construction sites along the roadways are focused on their job, sometimes using heavy equipment and often inches away from traffic. Drivers must remain alert, reduce speed, and follow posted signage. Speeding or operating your cellphone significantly reduces your ability to react. One moment of inattention can have life-altering consequences. Remember, every person working along the roadway is someone’s family member and deserves to go home at the end of the day.”
