BUFFALO, N.Y. – According to a news release issued last week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers (CBP) at the Buffalo, N.Y., port of entry seized nearly 350,000 batteries on March 26 at the Peace Bridge warehouse that did not comply with child protective packaging standards.
On Feb. 9, CBP states its officers inspected a commercial vehicle transporting a cargo of hearing-aid batteries and detained it pending further investigation.
After submitting a sample of the batteries to investigators at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), investigators determined that the batteries violated Reese’s Law, which requires that products containing button cell or coin batteries have secure, child-resistant battery compartments to prevent ingestion injuries.
“CBP officers at the Buffalo port of entry are committed to protecting the public from unsafe products and this seizure demonstrates our dedication to safety and compliance,” said Acting Port Director Sharon Swiatek. “Working closely with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, our officers took decisive action to prevent these hazardous items from entering the U.S. marketplace.”
