UPTON, Kentucky — A fire truck in Kentucky did its job and more last week.

On Friday, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the Upton, Kentucky, Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 65 northbound near the 79-mile marker, according to a release issued over the weekend.

“While crews were operating on the scene, an Upton Fire Department apparatus positioned in a secured blocking position to protect responders and provide advanced warning of the accident scene ahead was rear-ended,” said Upton Fire Chief Tyler Hiser. “The apparatus was unoccupied at the time of the collision.
There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.”

The crash involved a blue Kenworth 18-wheeler as photos posted to social media showed. There was no word on the condition, or if the driver of the big rig would face charges.

“Despite the incident involving their own department, Upton firefighters continued serving the community by responding to four additional calls on Interstate 65 throughout the day,” Hiser said. “Their dedication reflects the commitment volunteer firefighters make every day to protect the public, even in dangerous conditions. This incident is another reminder of the serious dangers emergency responders face while working on interstate highways. Distracted driving and failure to slow down or move over continue to place firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement, and the motoring public at risk.”

“We urge all motorists to stay alert, slow down, and move over for emergency vehicles and roadway incidents,” Hiser added.
